چکیده

Tuberculosis is considered as the greatest cause of death worldwide. In the developing countries including Bangladesh, population density, poverty, malnutrition, and highly congested environment may create substantial risk for infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The principal obstacle in the treatment of tuberculosis is the consumption of time and inaccurate diagnosis as well. Therefore, a retrospective study was carried out in order to compare results obtained by both the conventional AFB (Acid Fast Bacilli) microscopy and Lowenstein-Jensen (L-J) culture method for detection of Mycobacterium spp. in clinical samples from different categories of patients. Among one hundred and fifty samples, 83 (55.3%) AFB +

Diagnosis of smear-negative tuberculosis is greatly improved by Xpert MTB/RIF

BACKGROUND Diagnosis of pulmonary (PTB) and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in smear-negative patients can be difficult. We assessed retrospectively the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF system (Xpert, Cepheid) in diagnosing smear-negative tuberculosis (TB), which represents the most common form of TB in a low incidence setting. METHODS Performance of Xpert was compared to acid-fast microscopi...

Comparison of laboratory costs of rapid molecular tests and conventional diagnostics for detection of tuberculosis and drug-resistant tuberculosis in South Africa

BACKGROUND The World Health Organization has endorsed the use of molecular methods for the detection of TB and drug-resistant TB as a rapid alternative to culture-based systems. In South Africa, the Xpert MTB/Rif assay and the GenoType MTBDRplus have been implemented into reference laboratories for diagnosis of TB and drug-resistance, but their costs have not been fully elucidated. METHODS We...

Microscopic observation drug susceptibility assay for tuberculosis screening before isoniazid preventive therapy in HIV-infected persons.

BACKGROUND Active tuberculosis (TB) must be excluded before initiating isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but currently used screening strategies have poor sensitivity and specificity and high patient attrition rates. Liquid TB culture is now recommended for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in individuals suspected of havin...

The Comparison of Direct Microscopic Examination and Culture Results in Diagnosis of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

Abstract Background and Objectives: one of the endemic foci for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Iran is Mashhad in which limited outbreak have recently been reported. The commonly used method for diagnosis is the clinical features confirmed by direct microspic examination and culture or biopsy. We compared these two tests to determine the level of their sensitivity, specificity and positive predicti...
